Local court rejected the bail appeal of Goa’s former Public Works Department Minister Churchill Alemao who was arrested for having involvement with the Louis Berger bribery case.

District Judge B P Deshpande rejected the bail plea of Alemao. Alemao was arrested on the 5th August by the Crime Branch.

When Alemao was the PWD minister, official from the US-based company Louis Berger allegedly had paid bribes to win the consultancy for water augmentation and sewerage pipeline project under Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Police informed that, Alemao was arrested under various sections of Prevention of Corruption Act and 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code.

It was also revealed that Alemao had mentioned that the allegations were politically motivated.

According to the Police records, apart from Alemao there were more three people involved in it and had also arrested them for having connection with the bribery scandal. Former vice president of Louis Berger Satyakam Mohanty head of JICA-aided the project in Goa Anand Wachasunder and alleged hawala dealer Raychand Soni.

For the same case as a part of investigation the Former State Chief Minister Digambar Kamat was also questioned twice for having connection with the case. And having the fearing arrest in the case, he had earlier moved to the district court for anticipatory bail.

Till now all the arguments on Alemao bail appeal is over and now the court is re-scheduled to pronounce its order on August 19.
