To pay tribute and a gesture of respect to the Missile Man ‘APJ Abdul Kalam’, the center has announced to make a memorial of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. The center and state officials inspected the place, where he was laid to rest in his hometown.

Peikarumbu, comprising of 1.84 acres of land was surveyed by officials where Kalam was laid to rest. While being surveyed it was found that the land doesn’t match the road level which could be brought to the level and memorial can be built.

“The memorial would highlight what Kalam had exemplified in his lifetime and would comprise a library, museum and a meditation centre”, said Ganesan CPWD Executive Engineer and a member who visited the site.

Large numbers of trees were planted by the visitors at the site, where the memorial would be constructed. Ganesan requested the visitors not to plant trees, as tree plantation could be done in a beautiful manner after the memorial is built.

Independent MP Rajeev Chandrashekhar had made a recommendation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on building memorial for the Bharat Ratna.

“It should be a national memorial that commemorates the values of President Kalam which was exemplified in his lifetime,” said Chandrashekhar.

Many followers of Kalam had demanded memorial including his family to promote his vision to the country.

Mr. Kalam, the country’s 11th President, was one of India’s most eminent scientists, and had the unique honour of receiving honorary doctorates from 30 universities and institutions.

He has been awarded with the civilian awards - Padma Bhushan (1981) and Padma Vibhushan (1990) and the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna (1997).
