The ministry of internal affairs on Tuesday after an emergency meeting in Brussels confirmed that Portugal will receive 4,500 - 5,000 refugees from Italy and Greece.

EU government reached a deal to share 120,000 refugees around most countries in Europe, with the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia all voting against creating the quota.

At first, Portugal was to receive 1,500 refugees but this number has risen proportionally as more enter Europe.

According to the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, one million refugees are estimated to enter the EU this year, with around 400,000 residing long-term.
