Journalist from Cumhuriyet has been arrested on account of footage shown of state intelligence agency sending weapons to Syria.

Facing criminal charges and censorship, editor-in-chief Can Dundar and Erdem Gul were taken into custody on Thursday. They were also accused of exposing the state secrets and violation of state security after release of the footage.

Video shows that the police offices are seen opening crates of trucks and having a look at it, which the journalist claimed to be arms and ammunition.

Before appearing on court Dundar said, “We came here to defend journalism. We came here to defend the right to public to obtain the news and their right to know if their government is feeding them lies. We came here to show and to prove that governments cannot engage in illegal activity and defend this.”

However, the state for defending themselves says that the weapons shown in the footage was a help to Syrian Turkmen which is a Turkic minority.
